Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a common virus spread by intimate (usually sexual) skin-to-skin contact that can lead to certain types of genital, oral, &/or anal cancers later in life. These cancers usually take years, even decades, to develop after a person contracts HPV.
CDC recommends that people receive two doses of HPV vaccine at age 11-12 for the best protection against HPV. However, adults 18+ who did not get the two-dose series as children can still be vaccinated. (A three-dose series is recommended for adults.) Better late than never, as HPV vaccination can prevent more than 90% of cancers caused by the virus.
