Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) – Measles is a disease caused by a highly contagious airborne virus. Symptoms include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Some people could also get a serious lung infection such as pneumonia. Mumps is a highly contagious virus spread through close contact with an infected person. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite, and swollen and tender glands under the ears or jaw. Rubella, also called German or three-day measles, is a disease caused by a highly contagious airborne virus. Symptoms include a rash followed by fever, headache, red eyes, swollen and enlarged lymph nodes, cough, and runny nose. Rubella infection in a pregnant woman is dangerous to the baby, as it could cause birth defects such as deafness, cataracts, heart defects, mental disabilities, and organ damage.
While most US citizens receive the MMR vaccine as children, unvaccinated adults 18+ should get at least one dose of MMR vaccine. Adults in high-risk settings (i.e., students at post-high school education institutions, healthcare personnel, &/or international travelers) should get two doses separated by at least 28 days.
