Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis Vaccine (TDAP)

Being fully vaccinated is the most effective way to prevent tetanus. Make sure you and your family are protected by being up-to-date with their tetanus vaccine.

  • Available without a prescription
  • Covered by most insurance plans
  • Available for those 18 years and older
  • Recommended for adults to receive a booster shot every 10 years to stay protected

What is Tetanus?

Tetanus is caused by bacteria that enter the body during an injury or anytime the skin is broken, and cannot spread from person to person. Tetanus is often called "lockjaw" because the person cannot open his/her mouth due to the jaw muscles tightening. Other symptoms include headache, muscle spasms and muscle stiffness and seizures.

What are Diphtheria and Pertussis?

Diphtheria is a contagious disease that spreads through direct contact with an infected person, usually via coughing or sneezing. Like tetanus, it can be fatal if untreated or can cause severe damage to the nerves and heart. Pertussis (whooping cough) is a very contagious disease that can cause death. This disease is most severe among children younger than 5 years old.
